There was once a hunter(獵人) who , on the seventh birthday of his son, decided to go hunting to get something nice for his son. But as he reached for the gun on the wall, it fell down, and the barrel (槍管) was bent like the letter L.

Father, thats a bad sign, cried the boy. Please dont go hunting today.

You are silly! said the father. Thats a good sign. L means Luck.

The father went to a mountain lake. There were thirteen wild ducks on the lake! Twelve were playing in the water, and the thirteenth was sleeping beside a rock..

Great! the hunter aimed at one of the ducks.

Bang! went the shot. Ah, but as the gun barrel was crooked(彎曲), the bullet went zigzag, zigzag, hitting all the twelve ducks in the water and then hitting the thirteenth sleeping duck.

The ducks didnt die at the moment, so the hunter tried to catch them. When he finally held the last duck by the neck, it suddenly hit the water for the last time with its wings. The something jumped out of the water and landed near the bank---a huge fish!

The Wilsons decided to go overseas for vacation. They had a family meeting(會議) to plan the vacation. “First,” Mr Wilson said, “we should decide where we are going.”

“I don’t agree,” Mrs Wilson said, “I think we should decide when we are going first. We don’t want to go to places when they are cold.” Mr Wilson agreed, so the family’s first decision was when to go on vacation. They decided to go in July.

“Now we can decide where to go,” said Mr Wilson.

“But, Dad,” Ben said, “don’t you think that where we go depends on how we go? If we plan to fly, we can go a long way. If we plan to drive, we can’t go far.”

Again, Mr Wilson agreed, and they discussed this. At last they agreed to travel by plane.

And so the planning meeting went on. The next day, one of Mr Wilson’s friends at work asked, “Where are you going for vacation?”

We were doing the best to control the fire of the burning garage (車庫). Outside, I heard the sounds of cats crying. I couldn’t stop—I would have to look for the cats after the fire was put out.

It took a long time to finally bring the big fire under control. No one inside was hurt. At that point I was free to find out where the cat noises were from. There was still a lot of smoke and heat coming from the building. I followed the meowing to the sidewalk in front of the garage. There, crying and huddled (擠作一團) together, were five frightened kittens (小貓). They must have been inside the building, as their fur was badly hurt.

I wanted to find the mother cat. It was clear that she had gone into the burning garage and carried out all her babies, one by one—unbelievable.

We finally found her. Her paws and face were blackened, and her fur was burned all over. You could even see her reddened skin under the burned fur. She could hardly move. I picked her up, and she relaxed in my arms as much as her pain would allow. I decided to save this brave little cat and her family.

The vet told me they would watch the kittens and their mother for the night, but they weren’t confident about the mother’s chances.

About a week later, I found out she was going to live. We named her Scarlet because of her reddened skin.

I was happy to see Scarlet get together with the kittens again. She touched each of them, nose to nose. She had been in danger for five times and it had paid off. All of her babies had survived.

As a fireman, I see heroic acts every day. But what Scarlet showed me that day was the kind of bravery that can only come from a mother’s love.

C. The writer didn’t find the cats until the smoke and heat were gone.

D. The mother cat moved all her babies out of the fire to a safe place.

2.Why did the writer decide to save the cats?

A. Because he was amazed at the mother cat’s courage.

B. Because the cats attracted many people’s attention.

C. Because he didn’t want to see any living things die.

D. Because it had taken him much time and effort to save them.

3.The writer talks about the cat’s story to show that ________________.

A. animals should be taken good care of

B. mother’s love can be great and brave

C. it is meaningful to help others

D. a cat always has nine lives

The class teacher thought that hobbies were important for children. So she encouraged all her students to have one, and sometimes she arranged hobby shows for their parents to see as a result.
One morning the teacher told the class to have a holiday and get their hobby things to school before 5p.m. A hobby show would be held the following afternoon.
So in the afternoon, the students with nothing to show did their lessons at school as usual, while the lucky ones had a holiday to go home for their hobby works.
When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. “I don’t believe Tommy has a hobby,” she thought. However, at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection of butterflies in glass cases. The teacher liked the samples(標本) very much and put them on a desk in the classroom. But, to her surprise, Tommy picked them up again and began to leave.
“What are you doing, Tommy?” she asked. “Those things must stay here until tomorrow afternoon. That’s when the parents are coming to see them.”
“I know that,” answered Tommy, “and I will bring them back tomorrow, but my big brother doesn’t want them to be out of our house at night.”
“But, aren’t the butterflies yours?” asked the teacher.
“No,” answered Tommy. “They are my brother’s”
“But Tommy, you should show your own hobby here, not somebody else’s”
“I know that,” answered Tommy. What surprised her most was the answer, “My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies.”
