Dear Li Ming,
I learned from a news flash that a two-year-old baby girl was ignored by more than a dozen passers-by after being run over twice in a south China town.I'm very shocked.I used to think the Chinese were hardworking and kindhearted, and they really were when I was on a visit in China two years ago.So I doubt whether it was true news. Can you tell me what you learned about this incident?
Sincerely yours,
Kristie

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was    36    to see that it was an English-English dictionary, also known as a monolingual dictionary.    37    it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one.    38    , to be honest, I found it extremely    39    to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and    40

not fully understand the meanings. I was used to the    41   bilingual dictionaries, in which the words are    42    both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why my aunt    43    to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I    44    that monolingual dictionaries are    45    in learning a foreign language.

As I found out, there is,    46   , often no perfect equivalence(對應)between two    47   in two languages. My aunt even goes so far as to    48   that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the    49    meaning of a word in English!    50  , she insisted that I read the definition(定義)of a word in a monolingual dictionary    51    I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning.    52   , I have come to see what she meant.

Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses only a(n)   53    number of words, around 2,000, in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am    54    exposed to(接觸)the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas.    55    this, I can express myself more easily in English.

A great many people are disappointed because of unrealistic expectations.
Walking up to a department store’s cloth counter, a(n)  1   young woman said, “I want to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?”
“Only one   2   per yard,” replied the smirking (自鳴得意的) male clerk.
Not to be taken back by the funny words, the woman said,” That’s fine! I’ll take ten yards.”
With   3  written all over his face, the clerk   4   measured out and wrapped the cloth, then held it out teasingly,  5  forward to receive his “  6  ”.
The woman got the package quickly from the clerk and pointed to a little old man standing beside her. “Grandpa will pay the bill instead of me,” she   7  .
He was no doubt disappointed. But in the course of living, many people are  8         when others do not   9  their expectations. In order to be happy, some expectations must be dropped. These three particular   10   and unhealthy expectations are some of the main causes:
1. Expect too much  11  .When others say, “Thank you,” or in any way to show their gratitude, be happy. It is a gift!
2. Expect others to make you happy. They simply cannot do that. Make yourself happy and       12  your joy with others.
3. Expect not to be  13   . At times, people will simply not come through for you in the way you need.  14   them and move on.
Get rid of these three unrealistic expectations and you can begin to expect more   15        right away!
