　　Fifteen minutes to kick - off. The streets around the stadium are empty for policemen standing on corners, watching for trouble. The fans are all inside. A police helicopter passes low overhead.

　　My friend is a Wolveshampton Wanderers fan. I support the home team, Brighton. It is my local team. But there is no neutral place to standwe must watch the match among my people or his. “Let's go in with the Wolves,” I say, conceding he is my guest, “Thanks,” he says. “I appreciate it.”

　　By standing together, though, we are breaking the rules. All the entrances to the stadium are marked either “Home Supporters Only” or “Away Supporters Only”. Each entrance is guarded by a small group of policemen. We walk along the side of the stadium, looking for a viable turnstile.
