With my student teaching behind me，I started out at a school in another part of town and was determined not to face another classroom where I didn't have control．Day one I read my new fourth grade the longest list of rules they'd ever heard．I was the teacher．I was running the show．It was the students'job to sit still，listen，and do as they were told．Much to my surprise，they did just that．Three days went by．Two weeks passed．I was in control．
By the end of September the headmaster was noticing the straight line we maintained while walking．My colleagues praised the class for getting drinks so quietly．Visitors smiled at the straight rows of hard-working，orderly students．I was pleased．
I might have felt even more successful if I hadn't felt I was burning out fast．I found myself being angry with my students，who just sat there，not fully appreciating everything I was doing for them．
I shared my frustration with Mr．Greg，who invited me to observe one of his classes．I didn't want to like his class，and at first I didn't have to．My first impression was of loud voices and of students moving around the room at will．However，the longer I stayed，the more I was amazed．Mr．Greg wasn't being"tough as nails，"and yet this wasn't really chaos（混亂） at all．Students were discussing ideas for their own writing with each other．They didn't seem to need controlling---they were controlling themselves．

I thought about that long and hard．I thought I had learned that giving a class freedom could only lead to trouble．Responsibility？My students have plenty of that：they were responsible for turning in their homework and for keeping their desks in order．I certainly agreed with Greg about responsibility．
It took me a while to catch on，but the seeds had been planted．The next week I put Shelley in charge of the weekly report．Matt was asked to bring in some articles for Friday social studies．Francis was glad to take pictures for the class scrapbook（剪貼薄）．Slowly，I realized everyone could participate with a little guidance．
I was catching on to the fact that what was true for me was also true for my students：I worked hard when I felt in control of the situation．And so did they．In a classroom where the teacher did everything，it was only natural that the students stopped working hard．
It didn't happen overnight．But the classroom gradually became a happier place for all of us．I wasn't as tired because I wasn't the only one working．My students---most of them，at least---were working much harder．And they were enjoying it．
Four years later I'm still learning．I still want to run the show．It's often more difficult for me to relax，sit back，and watch a student take charge than to bear the entire responsibility myself．I have to remind myself that the order，the control，when it eventually does come，will be a whole lot easier to live with，easier and happier for all of us．
