We’ve used the wind as an energy source for a long time. The Babylonians and Chinese were using wind power to pump water for irrigating crops 4,000 years ago, and sailing boats were around long before that. Wind power was used in the Middle Ages, in Europe, to grind(磨碎) corn, which is where the term “windmill” comes from.

We can use the energy in the wind by building a tall tower, with a large propellor(螺旋槳) on the top. The wind blows the propellor round, which turns a generator to produce electricity. We tend to build many of these towers together, to make a “wind farm” and produce more electricity. The more towers, the more wind, and the larger the propellors, the more electricity we can make. It’s only worth building wind farms in places that have strong, steady winds, although boats and caravans(大篷車)increasingly have small wind generators to help keep their batteries charged.

The best places for wind farms are in coastal areas, at the tops of rounded hills, open plains and gaps in mountains — places where the wind is strong and reliable. Some are offshore. To be worthwhile, you need an average wind speed of around 25 km/h. Most wind farms in the UK are in Cornwall or Wales. Isolated places such as farms may have their own wind generators. In California, several “wind farms” supply electricity to homes around Los Angeles.

The propellors are large, to obtain energy from the largest possible volume of air. The blades can be angled to cope with varying wind speeds. Some designs use vertical turbines (垂直渦輪機), which don’t need to be turned to face the wind. The towers are tall, to get the propellors as high as possible, up to where the wind is stronger. This means that the land beneath can still be used for farming.

The first paragraph aims to introduce to us _______.

A. the function of wind power                     B. the source of wind power

C. the nations using wind power                     D. the history of using wind power

The best places for building the wind farm are places where _______.

A. boats and caravans can often be seen      B. isolated farms don’t have enough electricity

C. there are less human activities                 D. the wind is strong and reliable

We can infer from the passage that _______.

A. wind farms will not take up too much farming land

B. wind farms need no fuel because wind is free

C. the blades can be angled to turn to face the wind wherever it comes from

D. the higher and larger the towers are, the stronger the wind is

What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A. Where to build a wind farm.                 B. ABC of the using of wind energy.

C. How to make best use of wind.              D. Wind energy is the best energy.

The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means______________________.

A. The blades can increase wind speeds

B. The blades can decrease the wind speeds

C. The speed of blades can be changed.

D. The blades can be adjusted to face different wind speeds

"S. H.E. is going to sing at the CCTV annual Spring Festival Evening Party, is that true?" cried out Peng Weiye, a Senior 2 girl in Shanghai and die-hard S. H.E. fan.

After checking it on the Internet, Peng quickly phoned friends to spread the news. For fans like her, S. H. E. ’s performance is perhaps the only part of the old fashioned evening to get excited about.

The Taiwanese band is made up of Selina, Hebe and Ella. Their name comes from the first letter of each of the singers' English names.

Last week S. H. E. announced they would perform in Las Vegas, US, over Christmas and then in Guangzhou on January 15.

At their Shanghai show on October 30, hundreds of parents waited outside the Hongkou Stadium. Inside, thousands of teenagers sang, cried and shouted as the band performed.

"I love their music, healthy image and everything related to them. Thank God that, although my parents don't understand why I love them so much, they still bought me a ticket for that show," said Peng about the Shanghai performance.

It is not just on the mainland that the three girls have made audiences much excited. In the past year the band has passed through Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Singapore and Malaysia.

When the three high school girls entered a singing contest in Taiwan in 2000, none of them ever dreamed of being a superstar. "We had never met before, and we didn't talk at all at the beginning," recalled Ella.

When asked about the secret of their success, she said, "Our average looks and not-so-expensive clothes keep us close to our fans. We are happy to be the girls next door, your singing sisters."

科目:高中英語 來源:20102011年遼寧省高二下學期期末考試英語 題型:閱讀理解

Anchors(新聞節目主持人)on China Central Television(CCTV) will need to do some fast talking to replace the popular English acronyms(首字母縮略詞)they are now banned from using. Shanghai Daily reports that “anchors at China Central Television have been banned from saying the English acronyms NBA, CBA, GDP, and the like in their programs.”

The replacement for those handy acronyms? Chinese presenters must use the full Chinese name, standardized by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

Although CCTV(oops, we mean China Central Television) presenters must already have a score of at least 94 in their government-rated oral mandarin proficiency(普通話水平)exam, saying the full name of organizations like the CBA and WTO---10 and 6 characters’ long respectively---is sure to challenge even the most skillful anchors. CCTV sports anchor Sun Zhengping tells Shanghai Daily, “A full Chinese explanation of the English initials must be followed if my tongue slips. It is a little troublesome but a necessary one because not every member of the audience can understand the initials.”

Although the government isn’t giving any official explanation for the shift, it is believed to have something to do with a proposal by Huang Youyi, director of the China International Publishing Group, at March’s NPC meeting. In his speech, Huang said, “With more and more publications mixing Chinese with English, measures and regulations should be adopted to avoid English invading Chinese. If we don’t pay attention and don’t take measures to stop the expansion of mixing Chinese with English, Chinese won’t be a pure language in a couple of years.”

Although China is far from the first country to take measures to protect local languages, acronyms are more about saving time than they are about corrupting(破壞)a language, we would think. Good luck to the CCTV anchors.

1.CCTV anchors have to “do some fast talking” because they can no longer                       ____________________.

A.                   speak as slowly as they like

B.                    mix English into Chinese

C.                    use shortened Chinese expressions

D.                   have much time for their programs

2.According to the writer, “CBA” is supposed to be replaced with “________________”by CCTV anchors.

A.                     中國男子籃球職業聯賽

B.                      中國籃球協會全國男女籃球職業聯賽

C.                      中國籃球聯賽

D.                     男子籃球聯賽

3.What’s Huang Youyi’s purpose?

E.                      Using full English names instead of short forms.

F.                      Translating Chinese terms into proper English.

G.                     Avoiding Chinese words being mixed into English.

H.                     Keeping our mother tongue a pure language.

4.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

I.                        China has fallen behind in the matter of protection of its language.

J.                       The ban is not necessary.

K.                     Chinese shouldn’t be corrupted.

CCTV anchors will have a hard time.
