A telescope (望遠鏡), called Gaia, is being designed by astronomers in Europe, and it couldn’t be more different from Pan-STARRS, which is another telescope being designed. While Pan-STARRS will be looking for asteroids (小行星) and comets headed for Earth, Gaia will be looking at our entire galaxy (銀河系).

Gaia is designed to draw a map of the Milky Way, our home galaxy. Just as a map of your town gives you a picture of where things are located, Gaia’s map of the galaxy will tell astronomers where the stars are. Over five years, Gaia will observe (觀察) about a billion stars and other objects in our galaxy. Each object will be observed about 70 times.

Gaia will be sent into space connected to a rocket. It contains two telescopes, each focused at a different angle (角度). These two telescopes act like Gaia’s “eyes”. The reason why humans can see things in 3D is that we have two eyes focused on the same object, at slightly different angles. By using two telescopes like eyes, Gaia can produce the first 3D map of the positions of the stars it views.

Gaia, which is to be sent into space in 2011, will be a powerful telescope. If you were to use it on Earth, for example, you could stand 600 miles away from your best friends and still get a clear picture of their hair.

Gaia is one of more than a dozen telescopes being designed by scientists right now. The next generation of telescopes will reveal new parts of our universe that will seem surprising. The universe, with all its planets, stars and other strange objects, is a puzzle with pieces that we can see by using powerful telescopes.

1.How many different angles can Gaia focus at each time?

A. 2 . B. 3. C. 4 . D. 5.

2.The map to be drawn by Gaia ______.

A. can show every building on Earth

B. can show you where your town is

C. will just show the stars around Earth

D. will show where the stars are in our home galaxy

3.What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A. What Gaia will do in space.

B. When Gaia will start to work.

C. How powerful Gaia will be.

D. What Gaia will do to Earth.

4.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggests that the next generation of telescopes _______.

A. seem very surprising to scientists

B. will not be put into use in a short time

C. will just look at new things in universe

D. will be more powerful than the old generations

Robots performing tasks according to a predetermined set of instructions are nothing new.But robots able to learn how to cook by watching videos are a completely different approach, which is conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Maryland.

If you have posted a video of your favorite recipe on the popular website YouTube, chances are that it will be used by a robot.University of Maryland's professor Yiannis Aloimonos, leader of the group, said “There exists a large amount of video information on the Internet that our robots can capitalize_on.”

“At present, the videos are fed electronically,”said research scientist Cornelia Fermuller.“Originally, we took our own videos, our cameras looking at us doing the cooking,”she explained.“And, as the robot advances, it reacts to good quality videos. And it will react to even lower quality homemade videos.”

So far, the robot named Julia can make a simple salad by breaking each task into basic parts, such as grasping a spoon, bringing it to the bowl, stirring the salad and observing the results.

But why teach a robot how to understand a video when it can easily follow a fixed program?Aloimonos believes predetermined instructions lack flexibility. He thinks one of the problems is how to make the robot understand and use what it learns during a certain task, the so?called feedback (反饋意見); another is the introduction of language.

“I believe it will take quite some time before the robots are able to understand metaphorical (比喻性的) language,”he added.“But,” he said,“we don't need that to create a new world where the robots will be working for us.”

1.The underlined phrase “capitalize on” in Paragraph 2 probably can be replaced by ________.

A.take hold of B.make use of

C.keep track of D.catch sight of

2.Aloimonos probably agrees that at present the robot ________.

A.can not fully digest what it learns

B.can not make a simple salad

C.can follow home?made videos

D.can understand metaphorical language

3.Robots are taught to understand a video mainly because ________.

A.they can easily follow fixed programs

B.they are smart enough to learn cooking

C.cooking videos are more interesting to watch

D.predetermined instructions are not flexible

4.Which of the following might best serve as the title of the passage?

A.Robots Creating a New World

B.Robots Making Cooking Videos

C.Robots Learning to Cook by Watching Videos

D.Robots Performing Tasks by Following Instructions

In some countries, open campus (校園) is widely accepted. For example, French students have a two-hour lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During their lunch break, they can eat at home or at a restaurant. But students in the Philippines have a tougher schedule. They have only two 15-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

What Schedule would be best for American schools?

Having breaks between classes is great, but having breaks off campus is even better. There are several advantages to open campus, including simple conveniences such as being able to eat different meals during lunchtime, rather than having the cafeteria (自助食堂) dishes, as well as having the chance to take a break at home.

However, there are more reasons I disagree with allowing high school students the right to have an open campus. Sure, it’s great being able to escape school during the day for a while, but soon enough that may easily become the rest of the day.

If open campus is allowed, it is very possible that such freedom will make it all too easy for students to skip their afternoon classes. Of course, there will be students responsible enough to come back to school.

But unexpected problems such as heavy traffic, city bus delays (延遲) or cars breaking down may prevent them from returning to school. It benefits the students to stay in school during lunch hours to avoid transportation issues.

Depending on how close the school is to restaurants and students’ homes, open campus could be a great idea. Unfortunately, though, most public schools in America are not located close enough to restaurants or students’ homes, thus causing the negative results to outweigh (超過) the positives in the end.

1.Compared with French students, students in the Philippines .

A.have a poor diet B.get better grades

C.have less freedom D.prefer eating on campus

2.In the author’s opinion, open campus will probably .

A.lead to heavy traffic

B.cause students to cut school

C.attract more students to school

D.increase students’ sense of responsibility

3.What can we learn from the text about most American public schools?

A.They have a two-hour lunch break.

B.They allow students to eat outside.

C.They plan to have open campus.

D.They are far from students’ homes.

4.The text mainly discusses whether high schools should .

A.have a strict schedule

B.have a long lunch break

C.have open campus for lunch

D.be located close to restaurants
