robot機器人;firefighter消防隊員;miner礦工;elderly people老年人;environmental pro?tection環境保護;effective有效的

I live in 2100.and our lives have changed greatly since we use robots.

We use robots widely to do dangerous jobs. They work as firefighters, miners, policemen and so on,preventing many accidents from happening, and saving many lives indirectly. They help house?wives with their heavy housework by cleaning, cooking and washing. Also they tell stories to put children to bed and take care of elderly people, keeping them from feeling lonely. Some heavy machines are transported and lifted by some kinds of robots. Even many hospitals use robots to help doctors check on and take care of their patients. They help clean the streets on hot summer and cold winter days, and even contribute to environmental protection.

Of course there's still a lot to be done to make robots even more powerful and effective.

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins,do you hurry on,not knowing what to do,or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the world's great religions (宗教) order us to be openhearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally (道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suf?fered misfortune and needed help,is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give anything to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.

First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable, but actually make a good living from begging. Giving things to. beggars only encourages this sort of evil (惡行) .Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one's sense of pride and selfdependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government and ask for help.

It is hard to come to any final conclusion. There are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.

Ever since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s,genetically modified (GM, 轉基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the word, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would,is it the best solution?

Despite what it promises,GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact studies show that the most widely grown GM crop,GM soybeans, has suf?fered reduced productivity. For instance,a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.

Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are expensive,GM com?panies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (殺蟲劑) .On the contrary,US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall in?crease in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. "The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true," said Bill Christison,President of the US National Farm Coalition.

At the same lime, the authors of the book World Hunger; Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by pro?duction, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report.

As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank re?port concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which "green" fanning is supposed to be the first choice.

(   ) 1. The author develops the second paragraph mainly         .

   A. by classification   B. by comparison

   C. by example   D. by process

(   ) 2. What does the underlined word "boost" in the third paragraph probably mean?

   A. Control. B. Evaluate. C. Obtain. D. Increase.

(   ) 3. GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from         .

   A. practicing " green" farming

   B. less use of chemicals

   C. fair distribution of their crops

   D. using more crops for fuel

(   ) 4. Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology?

   A. Optimistic. B. Defensive.

   C. Disapproving. D. Casual.
