Last December 5th our class organized an activity to celebrate the International Volunteer Day. We decided to spend the afternoon doing something for our school instead of having classes.

At the beginning of the first class in the morning, we gathered in our classroom and our monitor told us what we would do. As soon as we were divided into four groups we began to work separately. I was in Group 1. My classmates and I were responsible for the security of the school. We patrolled the campus with the guard to make sure everyone was safe at school. The students of Group 2 went to the garden to take care of the plants. Some were watering the flowers and trees while the others were trimming the bush. The third group helped the cook prepare for the dishes. They washed the vegetables and cut them into small pieces. Group 4 worked in the lab where they cleaned the test tubes and put them in good order. Having got the work done we all felt a sense of achievement. At the end of the last afternoon class we got together again in our classroom and elected the top ten volunteers for the day.

What a valuable experience I had in the high school! I’ll remember it forever.

負責,take care of照顧,prepare for為…做準備,cut them into被切成, At the beginning of the first class in the morning, we gathered in our classroom and our monitor told us what we would do. We patrolled the campus with the guard to make sure everyone was safe at school. Some were watering the flowers and trees while the others were trimming the bush. Group 4 worked in the lab where they cleaned the test tubes and put them in good order. Having got the work done we all felt a sense of achievement.

Throughout the centuries, various writers have contributed greatly to the literary treasure of books lining the shelves of today’s libraries. In addition to writing interesting material, many famous writers, such as Edgar Allan Poe, were larger-than-life characters with personal histories that are as interesting to read as the stories they wrote. Poe’s rocky life included being driven off from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1831 and an ongoing battle with alcohol. Yet, despite heavy gambling debts, poor health, and terrible unemployment, Poe managed to produce a body of popular works, including" The Raven" and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue.”

Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, once lived among the man-eaters in the Marquesas

Islands and wrote unusual tales inspired by his years of service in the U.S. Navy. Dublin-born Oscar Wilde was noted for his charming personality, his outrageous lifestyle, and creating witty phrases such as, "Nothing succeeds like excess." D.H. Lawrence wrote shameful novels that were often cut, and Anne Rice led a double life writing bestselling horrible novels under her real name and using "A.N. Roquelaure" for the lowbrow(文化低)unhealthy novels she penned on the side. Nonconformist不墨守成規的)author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau once fled to the woods and generated enough interesting material to fill his noted book Walden. Thoreau wrote on

the issue of passive resistance protest in his essay "Civil Disobedience”and served time in jail for refusing tax payments in protest of the United States government’s policy towards slavery. American short story writer O. Henry’s colorful life was ruined by tragic events, such as being accused and sentenced for stealing money from an Austin, Texas bank. Despite his success selling his short stories, O. Henry struggled financially and was nearly bankrupt when he died.

As diverse as these famous authors’backgrounds were,th即all led unconventional lives while writing great literary works that will endure throughout the ages. The next time you read an interesting book, consider learning more about the author by reading his or her biograp卜y so you can learn about the unique life experiences that shaped his or her writing.

Forget Twitter and Facebook, Google and the Kindle. Television is still the most influential medium around. Indeed, for many of the poorest regions(地區)of the world, it remains the next big thing—finally becomes globally available. And that is a good thing, because the TV revolution is changing lives for the better.

Across the developing world, around 45% of families had a TV in 1995; by 2005 the number had climbed above 60% . That is some way behind the U.S. ,where there are more TVs than people, and where people now easily get access to the Internet. Five million more families in sub-Saharan Africa will get a TV over the next five years. In 2005 , after the fall of the Taliban(塔利班),which had banned TV, I in 5 Afghans had one. The global total is another 150 million by 2013—pushing the numbers to well beyond two thirds of families.

Television’s most powerful effect will be on the lives of women. In India, researchers Robert Jensen and Emily Oster found that when TVs reached villages, women were more likely to go to the market without their husbands approval and less likely to want a boy rather than a girl. They were more likely to make decisions over child health care. TV is also a powerful medium for adult education. In the Indian state of Gujarat, Chitrageet is a popular show that plays Bollywood songs with words in Gujarati on the screen. Within six months, viewers had made a small but significant improvement in their reading skills.

Too much TV has been associated with violence, overweight and loneliness. However, TV is having a positive influence on the lives of billions worldwide.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Americans used to get access to the Internet easily.

B. The world’s TV sets will total 150 million by 2013.

C. 45% of families in the developing countries had a TV in 2005.

D. Over two thirds of families in the world will have a TV by 2013.

2.The author intends to ____________.

A. stress the advantages of TV to people’s lives

B. persuade women to become more independent

C. encourage people to improve their reading skills

D. introduce the readers some websites such as Google

3.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.TV Will Rule the World B.TV Will Disturb the World

C.TV Will Better the WorldD.TV Will Remain in World
