China launched its first lunar probe(探測(cè)器)on Wednesday,Oct. 24,moving a step closer to fulfilling its ambitions of one day reaching the moon.

The Chang’e-I satellite, named after a Chinese goddess who flew to the moon,1ifted off at 6:05 pm.Officials and tourists watched the launching at a site in Sichuan Province, while state television broadcasted live to the rest of the nation.

The probe is expected to circle around the moon for the next year, providing satellite images and other information.China prepares to launch a space vehicle to the moon by 2012 and then send an astronaut by 2020. Within an hour after its lift-off,the probe’s solar panels(電池板)had been opened, and space officials declared the launching a success.

In recent years,China’s space program has attracted international attention for its ambitions and fast—rising technological ability. In 2003,China became one of the only three nations after the United States and the former Soviet Union to send a man into space. However, the United States and other nations reacted violently with alarm when China successfully destroyed one of its own aging weather satellites out of use in a military test.

China is not the only space power in Asia. Last month,Japan launched its own lunar probe, and India plans its own lunar probe next year. Technological development is a motivator for all three countries, but so are nationalistic pride and regional competition.

“As lunar exploration shows our overall(綜合的)national strength,it is very significant for raising our international status and our national unity.”said Ouyang Ziyuan. a top scientist with China’s space program.

If you thought sports stars Yao Ming and Liu Xiang or Internet entrepreneurs Zhang Chaoyang and Ding Lei would automatically be on the list of the” Men of Our Time”,then you could be behind the times.
The surprise in the list of 10 men released by the All-China Women’s Federation yesterday is that it contains no celebrities- and the guiding factors seem to be care and sympathy for the opposite sex.
In fact,Liu and Yao,as well as actor Pu Cunxin—the image ambassador for China’s anti-HIV,AIDS campaign—appeared in a booklet given out at the contest’s launch ceremony in January. The federation wouldn’t say why they are not in the final list.
The winners, with an average age of 47.5,were selected by women officials and journalists of the nine women’s newspapers in China, whose standard was men promoting equality between the sexes.
Li Zhong hua, a 46-year—old air force officer who test-flies planes, said he thought he was chosen because” he takes good care of his family, and is a gentleman”.
”Gentlemen get more respect in our society. They should be like those in the movie Titanic, who let women and children lave first in life rafts。”he told China Daily.
Shi Hua shan,a 48-year-old policeman in Gui xi of Jiangxi Province, said that he became a”man in the eyes of women” because” women love stories of heroes saving beauties".
His team has rescued more than 180 women who were taken away by force and sold as wives in the mountain regions of Fujian Province.
Some other” Men of Our Time” are:

Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one major difference; in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all time. That's not rudeness— people are just too busy to bother looking.
Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they're certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection(沉思).Nor are they reading a book. New techology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London Underground is an e-book.
Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(乘車上下班的人). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000-yes, that's 40,000-"apps"(programs downloaded for the iPhone)have been designed.
Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-filler. One "app",called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination(目的地). ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the "steam" on your phone screen.
For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It's not just teenagers who "plug in" to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.
And if games, e-books and music aren't enough to keep you occupied. Then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm(掌上)DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all this distraction, it's amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

Third-generation mobile phones, known as 3G, are the next big step for the telecom industry. Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker than that in present technology. This means users can have high-speed Internet access and enjoy video and CD-quality music on their phones.
“Mobile data is not a dream; it’s not an option but a requirement,” said Len Lauer, head of a US communications company, Sprint PCS, at a 3G conference in Bangkok earlier this month.
With 3G, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday’s news; a 3G phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day. Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.
Face-to-face video calls
Don’t worry about getting lost. 3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset.
However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live two-way video communication, you can have face-to-face talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.
Many European countries have already launched the service. In May 2000 the US Government issued five license to run 3G wireless services, while the first 3G phones arrived in Italy in March this year.
International telecom companies can’t wait to sell 3G in China, the world’s largest mobile telecommunications market. But they will have to be patient. At the moment, China is busy testing its 3G-based technologies, networks and services. This will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.
“We need to create a pool of 3G customers before the large-scale commercial launch of the service,” said Fan Yunjun, marketing manager for Beijing Mobile. “We expect that the 3G licenses will be issued late next year.”

As Apple tries to maintain its growth and success in China, the world's largest smart-phone market is becoming even more critical. Apple's shares(股份) fell sharply as the company's earnings for the holiday quarter through December disappointed investors.

The sales of the iPhone, which include both the iPhone 5 and older models, came in at the low end of analysts' expectations, while the company's income plan for the second quarter was below analysts' forecasts, though Apple is known to give conservative (保守的) forecasts.

Som'6 analysts have said that for Apple to regain its growth, the company.needs a more aggressive strategy for markets, or more specifically for China, where the market for smart phones has been expanding more rapidly than anywhere else. In China, demand is particularly great for inexpensive phones that run on Android(安卓) operating system, sold by many Chinese phone makers as well as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.

But Apple says it's already enjoying strong growth in China. "We saw big growth in iPhones,"Chief Executive Tim Cook said. He said that the company has been quickly expanding its sales channels in China, including the number of Apple stores. "This isn't nearly what we need, we're not even close to that, but we're making great progress. " he said.

In China, a big missing piece for Apple is China Mobile Ltd. , the biggest local telecom carrier that doesn't yet sell the iPhone. Earlier this month, Mr. Cook met China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua in Beijing and discussed cooperation, stirring hopes that the world's largest mobile carrier may soon start offering the iPhone.

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is working on a lower-end iPhone that could launch as early as this year. But one possible challenge for Apple in China is that low-pricod Android-based phones are getting better in terms of quality. A report from CLSA in late November showed that many smart-phones sold at about 1,000 yuan ( $160) came with higher-reso-lution screens, better cameras and more powerful processors than phones at that price did a year earlier.

3.The author uses the report from CLSA to prove

A.their prices are actually lower than a year earlier

B.Apple in China has ability to deal with any problem

C.low-ended Android-based phones are progressing fast

D.the promotion of lower-end iPhone will face a challenge

4.The main purpose of the passage is to show the readers __

A.Apple.'s high popularity in China
