Newspapers have certainly been around for a long time. Many New Zealand newspapers are now heading towards their 125th anniversary(周年紀(jì)念)   of the first publication and some New Zealand papers are more than 140 years old.

However, some people think that newspapers are yesterday’s medium(傳媒)   and that new media, like television and even the Internet, will in the very near future cause newspapers to die. What is clear is that the growth of new media, and in particular the Internet, will cause newspapers to change themselves and change their product to meet customers’ needs.

People read newspapers because of their unique(獨(dú)特的) strength. They have a large audience and yet a certain appeal(吸引力)   . They reach the majority of the population each day through covering national and international news and yet they offer interest to gardeners, cooks and even slaves to fashion.

Newspapers also remain strong because of people’s continued love of reading. Reading is an active and in-volving(專注的) process, but people are able to read at their own speed and return to newspapers for reference purposes.

Newspapers will certainly not stop the Internet being a competitor(競(jìng)爭(zhēng)者) But no newly-introduced news medium has ever killed an old one,and if best guesses are to be made then it is likely that this will be the case with this new medium as well.

Communication is defined(定義) as the exchange of information between individuals(個(gè)體) ,media,or groups. However, a good communicator is someone who knows how to listen and understand well rather than just making himself or herself heard. Listening is the key to good communication. If you don’t know how to listen, then it’s not likely that there would be a free and willing exchange of ideas. Here are some tips to remember:

1. When you are listening to a friend’s opinions or even just taking part in a group discussion,be really present. Focus your attention on listening and not on daydreaming about other things. People can usually sense if they are getting half-hearted attention and it doesn’t feel good.

2. Usually, your friend already knows his/her way out but just wants someone to listen to him/her. So don’t offer to give advice unless it’s a matter of life and death. You become a more effective listener when you know when to keep quiet and when to speak up.

3. Though you might find it hard to look a person in the eye,try to do so. It will show that you are really listening. Whether you’re the speaker or the listener, you must try to make an eye contact, even briefly, just to make sure everyone’s still with you and understanding what you are saying or to let the speaker know you are listening attentively.

4. Once your friend has finished airing out him/her thoughts and asks for

your opinion, grab the opportunity to let him/her know how you feel about

his/her situation. Be careful about going too far with sharing your own life story, particularly about how you overcame the same situation. Keep the focus on him/her.

1. What’s the purpose of the passage?

   A. To tell us how to be a good listener.

   B.  To tell us the importance of talking.

   C.  To tell us when to keep quiet and when to speak up.

   D.  To tell us how to make ourselves better understood.

2. According to the author,a good communicator is someone who    .

   A. only listens rather than speaking

   B.  gives advice at any time

   C.  knows when to speak up and when to stop

   D.  keeps looking others in the eye

3. Which of the following words can replace the underlined phrase “airing

out” in the last paragraph?

   A. Spreading.   B. Expressing.

   C.  Concluding.   D. Inspiring.

4. According to the passage, which of the following might the author disagree with?

   A. You should put your heart into your communication when speaking with others.

   B.  It’s better to listen very carefully than to talk about your own problem.

   C.  Making eye contact is very important when communicating with others.

   D.  You should tell your own stories in detail if your friend is in the same

situation with you.

5. Make each tip with one of the following titles.

   a.  Know when to shut up

   b.  Don’t go too far

   c.  Be present

   d.  Look them in the eye

   A. 1 — b,2 — a,3 — d,4 — c   B. 1 — c,2 — d,3 — a,4 —b
