Going green seems to be fad(時(shí)尚)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the tow of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My life and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.

Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyle. We now shop at organic(有機(jī)的)stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

1.What might be the best title for the passage?

A. they needed to perform unusual green tasks

B. they didn’t know how to educate other people

Helping Students Find Their Writing Voices

One of the most frustrating things for writing teachers is reading papers that simply lack style. When all of the research has been completed and all of the sentences are structured well, but the paper still lacks some pizzazz(活力),it can be boring to grade. If you are searching for ways to help your students find their voices, why not try making students themselves the topic of the writing? 1.

Who are you?

One of the most difficult questions for students to answer is: “Who are you?” _ 2.__ In doing this, through writing, students will start to see their personalities differently and, hopefully, be able to add a feature to their writing.

Dear John

3. Encourage them to write to a famous person they’ve always admired, and then the one they absolutely hate. Explore how their language changes between the two letters. When students know their audiences, it is much easier for them to add the kind of personality their audience wants to see.

4. When students write about what matters most to them, they will often give you the best writing you’ve ever seen. You’ll get those when you ask questions that hit home. When students have something to say about a given topic, it can be easier for them to get their ideas down and then work on their writing style.

Get the words on paper, and then edit them

The most valuable lesson students can learn is to write first, and edit later. Have students write for five minutes about their topics. If they can get their ideas down on paper, that’s 90% of the battle. 5. This can help them realize that, once they have the ideas down, the rest is just fine tuning(微調(diào)). Once they have this skill mastered, it’s easy for them to start adding their own personal voices to their papers.

A. What matters to you?

B. What style is taught in class?

C. When they write about themselves, students’ voices often shine through.

D. Writing letters is a great way for students to explore their writing style.

E. Have your students explore who they are and what makes them unique.

F. Voice is that magical quality which is able to make a creative writing idea sing!

G. After that, have them edit these ideas into a really strong introductory paragraph.

Woman Uses Daughter's Key to "Steal" Car

Charlie Vansant, a college student of Athens, Ohio who reported that his car was stolen, got a surprise when he learned a woman had mistaken it for her daughter's car and taken it--using her key.

Kate Anderson became an accidental car thief when picking up her daughter's car near an Ohio University building last week. Anderson spotted the Toyota Camry(豐田凱美瑞)and used her daughter's key to unlock the car, start the engine and drive home-without realizing that the car wasn't her daughter's.

When Charlie Vansant left class a short time later, he found only an empty parking spot. He first assumed the car had been towed, but when the police couldn't find a record of it, they took a theft report.

The morning after Anderson took the car, her daughter discovered the Camry in the driveway wasn't hers. Anderson said she was able to find Vansant's name on paperwork in the glove compartment and look up his phone number on the website of the university.

When Anderson told Charlie the car was in her driveway, "It sounded real suspicious at first, as she wanted to hold the thing for ransom(贖金),” said Vansant. He eventually went to the house with a police officer, where he was reunited with his car. According to the police report, the case was closed "because of mistaken car identity", Anderson wasn't charged.

Vansant seemed to blame the car company more than the "thief". "Her key fit not only my lock, but my ignition(點(diǎn)火裝置) as well-so high-five for Toyota. I guess." he said.

D. Mrs. Anderson used her daughter's key to unlock Charlie's car and drive home.

3.What does Charlie mean by "high-five for Toyota"?

A. He is blaming Toyota for the poor quality of car keys.

B. He should thank Toyota for returning his car.

C. He wants to celebrate with Toyota for getting his car back.

D. He thinks highly of Toyota for producing large quantities of cars.

4.What is likely to happen next according to the passage?

A. Mrs. Anderson was charged with stealing a car.

B. Charlie blamed Mrs. Anderson for mistakenly taking his car.

C. Charlie would ask the Toyota Company to give him an explanation.

D. The Toyota Company would give Charlie a new car as compensation.
