UNITED STATES-A SOFTWARE program that can discover plagiarism(剽竊) is now helping 12 percent of US high schools cheating students.

The software, known as turnitin. com, compares a student's article to its large library of public books and articles, and then underlines the matching parts(相對應的抄襲部分).

Teachers say the software is also a tool to help students understand how to name their source material and avoid plagiarizing by accident.

There have been few occasions(場合) on which I have actually walked out of the cinema halfway through a film. The first time this happened when I was watching a story for children about animals living in a small village, riding in trains, shopping, and so on; the animals were all real. It was a sweet little film till you started wondering how these animals could act in such a human-like way and began to look for the wires and things that forced them to do so. The moment which had me walking out was a scene of a fox giving a hen a shampoo(洗頭) The look on the animals' faces and some signs of blood that appeared in the water were too much for me: how many hens died to make that particular scene?

The other two occasions on which I remember walking out were both when I had gone to see films that had appeared on some critics'(評論家的) list of the ten best films. Neither of them was interesting at all. In one the characters sat in a French country house, drinking and smoking and doing nothing except a little shooting. The other was about the life of a soldier in the First World War; it told me more about life in this period than I had any wish to know. For two out of ten films to be so uninteresting must show that critics love things of little interest, I've never been to see the other eight.

1.The passage mainly tells us ________.

[ ]

A.what films the writer liked and disliked

B.why the writer walked out of films

C.what the writer thought of film critics' remarks

D.why the writer didn't go to see the other eight films

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面團) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I would not have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the window to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and the fermenting yeast(酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the “living thing” was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed(尷尬) by the whole thing-Doug or me.

1.Why did the woman's attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful?

[ ]

A.The canned orange had gone bad.

B.She didn't use the right kind of flour.

C.The cookbook was hard to understand.

D.She did not follow the directions closely.

2.Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?

[ ]

A.She didn't see the use of keeping it.

B.She meant to joke with her husband.

C.She didn't want her husband to see it.

D.She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.

Who taught you to speak English? Your parents, while you were a young child. Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.

There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the internet is in English.

Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate(慶賀) the fact that more and more of us can communicate(交流), using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of “mono-cultureness”, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?

Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary(相反), I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with India)…

If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonalds burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主導地位的), it will kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.

When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderful poetic email from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it's like a rose,” he said. “But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?”

Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don't necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that's fine by me.

1.By saying “Ask the people of India…and Pakistan”(in paragraph 4), the author is trying to show that ________.

[ ]

A.speaking the same language doesn't necessarily bring peace

B.wars can destroy the relationship between two countries

C.English doesn't kill other languages

D.English is widely used in the world

2.The author would probably agree that ________.

[ ]

A.it's very hard to plant many kinds of flowers in a garden

B.it's good for people from other countries to learn English

C.more and more people like to plant roses in their gardens

D.English will kill other languages

3.This passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.why English has become a global language

B.how people in the world learn English as a foreign language

C.how many people in the world speak English

D.whether we need worry about English being a world language
