Canada Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for her short stories that focus on human conditions, announced the Swedish Academy on October 10 ,2013.

The Swedish Academy honoured Ms Munro as “ a master of the contemporary (當代的) short story”. Some critics consider her a “Canadian Chekhov”.

Her works include Who Do You Think You Are ? ( 1978 ) , The Moons of Jupiter ( 1982 ) , Runaway (2004) , The View from Castle Rock ( 2006 ) and Too Much Happiness (2009) . Her most recent collection is Dear Life (2012) .Bom on July 10 ,1931 in Wingham,Ontario,Ms Munro grew up in the countryside. At just 11 years old,she decided she wanted to be a writer, and was never uncertain about her career choice. U?I think maybe I would be successful in doing this because I didn't have any other talents,n she once said in an interview. ?Her focus on the activity of writing means she is not the kind of writer who is interested in book-signing events or other publicity work.

Ms Munro is just the 13 th woman to win the Nobel Literature Prize since it was first awarded in 1901. She is also the first Canadian to win the great honour. Saul Bellow, who won the Nobel Literature Prize in 1976,was bom in Canada, but later became a US citizen.

Ms Munro will receive the prize sum of eight million Swedish kronor (about $1. 3 million) . She will be present with her award at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10 ,the anniversary of the prize founder Alfred Nobel's death in 1896.
