At present we will explain a very old saying that has had a great effect on rock-and-roll music. That saying is “A rolling stone gathers no moss(苔蘚)”.It has several meanings. One meaning is that a person who never settles down in one place will not be successful. Another is that someone who is always moving, with no roots in one place, avoids responsibilities.

This proverb was said to be first used in the 1500s. But in the 1960s, the expression “rolling stone” became famous in the world of rock-and-roll music. It became the name of a song, a rock group and a magazine.

Experts say it all started with a song by the American singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. He was one of the country's top blues musicians until his death in 1983. His music influenced singers like Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. In 1950, Muddy Waters recorded a song called “Rolling Stone”.

A British rock group is said to have taken its name from Muddy Waters' song. The Rolling Stones performed for the first time in 1962.The group's members called themselves “the world's greatest rock-and-roll band”.

In 1965, Bob Dylan released (發行)his song “Like a Rolling Stone”.It is one of his best known and most influential works.

It is an angry song about a woman who was once rich and successful. But now she is on her own, “with no direction home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone”.

In 1967, a young man named Jann Wenner started a magazine and he named it “Rolling Stone”. The magazine reported on rock music and the popular culture that the music created. By 1971, “Rolling Stone” had become the leading rock music and counterculture publication. It is still popular today.

1.All of them are musicians except ________.

A.Jann Wenner B.Muddy Waters

I remember the first time that I was extremely happy. I was about 8 years old when for the first time, there was a computer in the classroom. I remember that my teacher allowed each student to take turns to play various educational games on the computer. One day, I found the source code(編碼) for one of these games. Without knowing or being taught any programming language, I was able to figure out some of the BASIC code. I just gave myself an infinite number of lives in the game, so I could continue playing it forever. This was also my first introduction to algebra, and I didn't even know it at the time. This was a decisive moment in my life. I was quite excited because of what I was learning and what I was able to do. As a result, I was enthusiastic for the rest of my life about self learning and computers, and I was quite happy doing them too.

I've noticed that people who are truly content with life are enthusiastic about what they do. This enthusiasm, along with good health, is the key to being happy. It also leads to self-confidence and content in life too. It may also lead to success, wealth, and achievements.

Success, wealth, or achievements can also bring some people happiness, yet I know plenty of rich people who are unhappy. I know many people with successful businesses that are not happy with what they are doing. I know people who continuously buy themselves new toys, such as cars, computers, and televisions, yet never seem content for too long. Please remember, happiness is the journey of life, not the destination.

1.What can we know from Paragraph 1?

A. The author has a great talent for algebra.

B. Creative thinking is necessary for every child.

C. The BASIC code of the computer is not difficult.

D. The author's experience in his childhood changed his life.

2.The underlined word "infinite" means_______

A. big B. limitless

3.The author wants to tell us through his experience in the school that ________.

A. interest is the best teacher

B. children are the hope of the future

C. young people are fearless

D. where there’s a will, there’s a way

4.What is the secret of happiness in the author's opinion?

A. Success and wealth.

B. Gifts and self-confidence.

C. Enthusiasm and good health.

D. Knowledge and achievements.

5.We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.

A. people who are rich and successful in career generally feel unhappy

B. wealth can’t bring people any happiness and comfort

C. one will feel unhappy once he has gained all the things that he wants

D. being enthusiastic about what you do is more important than wealth

Some inventions are so useful, but seem so simple, that we wonder why no one thought of them long ago.

Post-it Notes were invented about twenty years ago by Art Fry, a scientist at 3M Company. The idea for the product came from an awful experience he often had while singing in his church choir. Fry used pieces of paper as bookmarks to mark the places in his book of songs, but these bookmarks were always falling out. Around that time, Fry heard about a new adhesive (粘合劑) that a colleague, Dr. Spence Silver, had created. This adhesive was special because it was strong enough to hold papers together, but not strong enough to tear the paper when it was removed.

A short time later, Fry realized that his new invention had even more uses than being a great bookmark. He came to this realization when he wrote a note on one of his new “bookmarks” and attached it to a report he was going to give to a colleague. Soon, co-workers were asking Fry for more of his invention so that they could use the new type of notes themselves.

Fry and some other people at 3M believed so much in the new product that they asked the company to give away thousands of the “sticky pieces of paper” for trial use. When some salespeople at 3M went to offices and showed workers just how helpful the new type of notes could be, they immediately received many orders. As more and more people discovered how useful Post-it Notes could be, the product took off.
