While nature lovers across the world wish all humans to realize the significance of their natural surroundings, many Australians are turning caring for the environment into a way of life.

Julie Astonis,an Australian housewife in Brisbane is one such example. Even though autumn is approaching Australia's Brisbane in April, one can still watch colourful blooming (盛開的) flowers in Julie's little garden,as she tells that in her community, "Each of us has a beautiful yard. The whole communi?ty,from children to elderly people, takes care of the environment as if they are tak?ing care of their own garden."

"Gardening is the most popular club in our community," she says. "A lot of retired people don't just regularly organize gardening lectures, but also personally visit families in the community to provide gardening training,so you can see that flowers continue to blossom in our gardens throughout the year."

Talking about her people's sense of care for the environment,Julie says when people in the community take along their dog, they always carry a garbage bag to deal with the dog's waste. "In our community, you will never experience the em?barrassment of stepping on the dirty waste while you are walking on the grass," says Julie with a smile. "Taking care of the dog's waste can also help to develop children's sense of responsibility!"

As to protecting water resources, the Australian government has made strict rules for families. Julie says, "We certainly would not use tap water to water the flowers!" She says almost every family in her community has a huge tank used to store rainwater, which is later used as the resource of all outdoor water use.

Each Sunday, people can hear the mu?sic of the Mission Dolores Basilica in San Francisco. The Spanish missionaries (傳教jr) built the church in 1791. It was the start of a special kind of neighbourhood: the Mission District.

The area is a place with a long and varied history. One community member says that it's important for people to understand the many levels of history in the neighbour?hood. He feels that this knowledge is a big part of under?standing what it means to be a real San Franciscan.

One of the most interesting parts of the district is its people. Over the years, immigrants have come to the area from Ireland,Germany, and Italy. But the most recent immigrants are mainly from Latin America. It's easy to see the style that these recent additions give to the neigh?bourhood. You can see it in the art on the walls, taste it in the food, and hear it in the music!

Juan Pedro Gaffney Rivera, the director of the Span?ish Choir (卩昌詩班) of San Francisco, says that the people there share the pain and happiness of their friends and family members and that music has always been a basic part of cultural identity in the district. He feels that the music of the district is colourful and lively.

But it isn't just its music that's colourful and lively. Its art is full of life as well.

The local art community stays close to the area's cul?ture and tradition. A local art organization often leads people on walks through the district. They visit streets like Balmy Alley, which is famous for its murals (壁幽) . Even though the meanings behind the murals are always changing, they are still very powerful. One artist explains that they are fighting for fairness in the community and to help the environment through murals. Apparently, they're something the community likes.

Many of these artists feel that the district is a suc?cessful neighbourhood where new immigrants are wel?come. "People see that they're not so different from each other," says one artist. "There are a lot of things that bind (插綁) the immigrants through culture and tradition."
