Kindness and kids just seem to go hand in hand. But 62% of more than 2,600 participants in the NBC News State of Kindness Poll believe that today’s kids are less kind than those in the past. Women(66%) feel about this kindness fall more strongly than men(58%). Most of the participants who feel that way(77%) thank parents caused the seeming lack of kindness among today’s children, with a few thinking that society, schools, or friends caused it.

At the same time, Americans say they don’t put kindness first when it comes to teaching kids values. Among all participants, honesty is taught more than kindness as well as other things like courage, leadership and storing work ethic(道德). But the younger generation—those aged 18-24—think highly of kindness rules. They choose kindness by 10% over honesty as the most important quality to teach kids.

The question of whether kindness is learned or taught—or somewhere in between —causes different opinions. According to the study, Americans have different opinions on whether kindness in something one is born with or needs to be learned and nurtured over time. Slightly more than half(52%) of the participants believe that all of us are born with the ability to show kindness, while 48% believe kindness must be developed.

Parenthood(父母身份) makes a difference to your thoughts on the causes of kindness. Those without kids(56%) are more likely to think that people are born to be kind, while 50% of the participants with kids think kindness is developed.

Also, 51% of dads and 54% of men with no kids believe kindness is something time is born with. Slightly more than half of the moms say kindness must be learned, while 48% believe it is what one is born with.

1.62% of the participants believe that today’s kids are ________.

D. not so kind as kids in the past

Where do you keep ice? In the freezer, of course. That's what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. They’ve decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.

Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault (地下室)there. He says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (樣本) is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries."

And why do scientists need to study ice from the Alps?Ice formed on the top of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles (氣泡) contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate. By examining ice, we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future.

The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientists from France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10 meters below the surface at a constant temperature of -50*C. This will put the scientists’ minds at rest. Losing the ice samples would be a disaster, and nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool.

1.What is the researchers' purpose of studying ice?

A. To learn about climate.

B. To learn about the Alps.

C. To trap air bubbles.

D. To reduce carbon dioxide.

2.Jerome compares ice with rocks and tree rings to state that ________.

A. ice should be stored at home

B. it’s more valuable to study ice

C. ice disappears very quickly

D. it's necessary to store ice

3.What makes Antarctica a safe place to store ice?

A. Its large mountains.

B. Its function as a freezer.

C. The abundant ice samples there.

D. The absence of global warming.

4.What do scientists think of storing ice in Antarctica?

A. They consider it an easy job.

B. They’re not optimistic about it.

C. They think it will cause disasters.

D. They think it’s a reliable way.

Writers used to approach publishers to have their work read by the public. Now they can simply post them and find millions of instant audience.

After breaking up with her boyfriend, Bao Jingjing started “making up” a love story simply to distract her attention. Her story of a girl suffering the pain like hers progressed quickly, attracting many readers.

When Bao stopped writing as she reunited with her boyfriend, she was urged to continue, as readers wanted to know what happened next. Bao finished it soon. It became so popular that it was turned into a best-seller. To cap it all off, Bao’s novel was later adapted into a successful movie.

Bao’s story is only one of many Internet novels that have landed deals for physical books, TV shows and films. Unlike traditional writers who buried themselves in their books for years, some young writers like Bao have got readers rapidly online and found overnight success.

Bao admits her success was unexpected. She still remembers how surprised her parents were when she proudly gave them her copyright earnings. Online literature forums(論壇) are platforms for grassroots writers to succeed.

In recent years, Zhang Wei, known as “Tangjiasanshao”, has earned 177 million yuan by his fingers though working as an author was beyond his dreams. He topped the list of wealthiest Chinese Internet novelists twice and was the only online writer to be listed on the 2014 Forbes “Chinese Celebrity List”.

He admits that he is one of the few writers at the top of the pyramid while most online writers remain unknown. However, he urged that his success can be achieved by others, as long as “they write hard enough”.

1.According to the passage, we know that ________.

A. Bao Jingjing’s parents didn’t want her to be a writer

B. Bao Jingjing didn’t really expect her success overnight

C. Bao Jingjing didn’t finish her first online love story

D. Bao Jingjing’s first online story was turned into a TV show

2.The author mentioned Zhang Wei’s example mainly to ________.

A. introduce another online writer to the readers

B. show the example of another online writer’s success

C. encourage readers to become online writers

D. express his admiration for online writer Zhang Wei

3.What can we infer from what Zhang Wei says in the last paragraph?

A. Few words, many deeds. B. First try, and then trust.

C. Harm set, harm get. D. No pains, no gains.
