The sea has always interested man. From it he can get food, minerals, and treasure. 1 But he could not go far beneath its surface.
2 However, he is not a fish.He must breathe air, so he can't stay under the water's surface for any length of time.To explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems.
A diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. 3 He can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a nose and a mouthpiece.Water weighs 800 times as much as air.Tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. 4
When a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. As he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less.If the diver rises too quickly, the gases in his blood form bubbles(氣泡).The diver is then suffering from the bends(潛水夫病).The bends can cause a diver to double up in pain. 5
A.His body is under great pressure.
B.Scientists are trying to find more about the sea.
C.For thousands of years, he could sail on it.
D.They can even kill him.
E.He can wear a diving suit and have air pumped to him from above.
F.The water pressure can cause a diver to breathe with difficulty.
G.Man wants to explore deep into the sea.

In a fast changing world, people seldom see a device or equipment that lasts for a long time these days. There are always new inventions, different models, or upgrades cropping up one after the other and as consumers people highly anticipate the faster and better kind than what they already have. Therefore it is quite a surprise that a mini projector(投影儀)is still in use today not only in small scale businesses, schools, or homes but in big corporations and institutions as well.Sure it has a few additional features here and there but the main function is the same.
A mini projector today has been fitted with top of the line parts and high quality materials to ensure its efficiency and performance can meet the demands of whoever it is for.It is so designed that it can be used indoors or outdoors with the same functions. The mini projector, as the name suggests, is handy and compact and can easily be brought anywhere by just one person. It can support a broader scope of signals now; USB and card readers are now installed to cope with the pieces of equipments that people use today to store data.
It can be used at home where it can provide as a form of entertainment or start a conversation during family bonding times. The owner can easily use the mini projector to share with other members the photos and videos of one particular vacation, or just to play a series of beautiful landscapes.
Offices also benefit from a mini projector especially during an important meeting or presentation. With at par resolution(標準的分辨率), employees can easily decipher(辨認)the text or data with the use of a mini projector, its bright LED light is sufficient enough to provide a bright and clear image without distortion(變形).Users can now bring this anywhere with them and can be especially useful on a location where the voltage(電壓)is unknown.
Perhaps one of the more common places where a mini projector is used constantly is in schools.Teachers or professors use this as an aid to a lesson or discussion to provide better visual aids than usual and to even deliver their lecture with the use of a mini projector and minimize the use of a board and writing pen.It is often said that children have a very short attention span but they remember things more when things are presented to them visually. This is the perfect use of a mini projector in classrooms where kids easily forget their lesson for the day.Teachers use this to show the class pictures or illustrations that tie with the topics for students to remember.

任務型閱讀 Florida, in the southeastern United States, is called the Sunshine State. It grows more oranges than any place except Brazil. But Arctic air has damaged some Florida oranges and strawberries in recent days, and killed fish at tropical fish farms. The unusually long period of cold weather has shown how even warm climates can sometimes freeze over. But protecting plants and trees in the garden may not be too difficult if you follow a few suggestions. Sudden cold can be the biggest threat, expecially after a warm period.Plants have not had a chance to harden their defenses. Those that are actively growing or flowering are at high risk. Try to choose plants that live best with cold weather, and make planting areas face west and south. Being near other growth may also provide warmth. Most frost damage takes place at night.Ice crystals form on the leaf surface. They pull moisture(水分) from the leaves and keep plant tissues from getting water. Cold weather is most likely to damage or kill plants that do not have enough moisture. So keep the garden watered.Moist soil absorbs more heat than loose, dry soil covered with mulch or vegetation. Experts of University of Arizona say covering plants and small trees with cloth or paper can help prevent frost damage.A onehundred watt light bulb designed for outdoor use can also provide warmth. Some people place Christmas lights on young trees for warmth. The bulbs should hang below the leaves to let the heat rise into the tree. Cold is especially dangerous to citrus trees.Agricultural specialists at the University of California suggest putting paper or cloth around the trunk and central branches of young Citrus trees. In Florida, as temperatures fell to record lows, citrus growers sprayed water on their trees to help prevent freeze damage. Jim Bottcher is a master gardener with the University of Florida extension. He explains that as the water freezes, it produces heat, and the ice forms a protective blanket around the tree.If you spray a tree, keep the water away from nearby power lines.Heavy ice can form and break them. You can also wrap a tree in palm tree frond leaves, corn stalks or fiberglass.Adding plastic film works well in rain and snow. But experts say plastic alone does not help much.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A---F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
Attention must be paid to environmental factors.
Principles of curing cancers.
It will take long to find perfect cures.
An important discovery in the research.
The causative factor of cancer is very clear.
The survival rate differs among patients with various cancers.
71. _____This year, 50 percent of the 910,000 people who suffer from cancer will survive at least five years. In the year 2000 , the National Cancer Institute estimates, that figure will be 75 percent. For some skin cancers, the five-year survival rate is as high as 90 percent. But other survival statistics are still discouraging-----13 percent for lung cancer, and 2 percent for cancer of the pancreas (胰腺) .
72. _______I have great confidence that by the end of the decade we'll know in vast detail how cancer cells arise, " says microbiologist Robert Weinberg, an expert on cancer. "But, " he cautions, "some people have the idea that once one understands the causes, the cure will rapidly follow. Consider Pasteur. He discovered the causes of many kinds of infections, but it was fifty or sixty years before cures were available. "
73. ______The exact process involved is still mysterious, but the likelihood that many cancers are initiated at the level of genes suggests that we will never prevent all cancers. "Changes are a normal part of the evolutionary process,” says oncologist William Hayward. Environmental factors can never be totally eliminated; as Hayward points out, "We can’t prepare a medicine against universe rays.”
74. ______With as many as 120 varieties in existence, discovering how cancer works is not easy. The researchers made great progress in the early 1970s, when they discovered that oncogenes, which are cancer-causing genes, are inactive in normal cells. Anything from universe rays to radiation to diet may activate an inactive gene, but how remains unknown. If several oncogenes are driven into action, the cell, unable to turn them off, becomes cancerous.
75. ______The prospects for cure, though still distant, are brighter. "First, we need to understand how the normal cell controls itself. Second, we have to determine whether there are a limited number of genes in cells which are always responsible for at least part of the trouble. If we can understand how cancer works, we can reduce its action. "
