In 1997, Garry Kasparov, the Russian grandmaster of chess (棋) who was then the world champion (冠軍), played a match against the I. B. M. supercomputer Deep Blue. Mr. Kasparov lost the six - game match by a single game. Now almost six years later, Mr. Kasparov begins a match against an Israeli program, Deep Junior, the three - time world computer chess champion. The match will be played at the New York Athletic Club, and shown in real time on the Web at www. x3dworld. com. The play will start at 3:30 p. m. on Jan. 26, 28, and 30, and on Feb. 2, 5, and 7.

As early as 1957, Herbert A. Simon predicted (預言) that a machine would become the world chess champion in ten years. A game of chess is considered a calculation (計算), and calculation, of course, is what computers are good at The situation today is that both humans and machines can play world - class chess, but they do completely differently. Deep Junior examines three million positions per second. But even at that speed, it cannot generally see that far ahead. That is because the number of possible chess positions is staggering. There are some 85 billion ways of playing just the first four moves for each side. The strength of worldclass human players lies in their ability to decide who stands better in a given position, and that ability is hard to build into a machine. Mr. Kasparov admits that he examines only one to three moves a second, but he is not sure that they are the strongest ones.

Although Deep Junior is much slower than the I. B. M. computer, experts said it had more chess knowledge built into it. It clearly considers more elements in judging a position. “Junior is very humanlike,” Mr. Kasparov said. “It's a computer version (轉(zhuǎn)變) of me. It plays forcefully, imaginatively and takes risks. The match will be close, but I'm determined to win. One thing I know is that humans' days at the top of the chess world are limited. I give us just a few years.”

[ ]

A.It has already beaten three human players.

B.It works much faster than Deep Blue.

C.It cannot choose ways of playing freely.

D.Its strength lies in its speed of calculating.

3.What does the passage lead you to believe about the match between Kasparov and Deep Junior?

[ ]

A.It's hard to tell who will win it.

B.It's likely that Kasparov will win it.

C.It's likely that Kasparov will lose it.

D.It's impossible that the match will be close.

4.What conclusion can you draw according to the passage?

[ ]

A.The balance between humans and computers will hardly be broken.

B.There will soon be no more hope for humans to beat computers.

C.There has never been any hope for humans to beat computers.

D.Human beings will always have advantages over computers.

5.Which would be the best title for the passage?

In the 1940s, Pinehaven Park was one of Crafton City's loveliest recreation(娛樂)areas. Over 40 acres of woods and fields were open to the public. In the 1950s, part of the park was taken over by Crafton City's garbage. Fifteen acres were to be used for landfill disposal(理置). As time went on, more and more of the park was used for garage disposal and less for recreation. Two years ago, the park was closed to the public for good. Along with household garbage, industrial chemicals had for years been dumped (傾倒)in the Pinehaven landfill. These poisonous chemicals had begun to seep(滲)back up through the soil. All of Pinehaven Park had become dangerously polluted.

Last year, the fish in the Crafton River began to die. After a series of investigations(研究), it became clear that the people of Crafton City were not to blame. 100~150 miles upstream, big paper mills were dumping industrial wastes into the river. Little by little, the level of poison in the river began to rise. Finally, it became so polluted that the fish themselves could no longer survive.

Downtown Crafton used to be a quiet area. Ten years of remarkable growth changed that in a big hurry. But with Crafton City's new prosperity(繁榮)came a new problem: air pollution. And it is a serious problem. Air pollution levels in Crafton are regularly reaching those of the nation's large industrial cities.

(1)Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.Chemical dumping is a serious threat to Crafton City's soil.

B.The rapid growth of industry has brought air pollution to Crafton City.

C.The disposal of garbage can destroy recreation areas.

D.Industrial growth and progress have resulted in the pollution of Crafton City's water, air, and soil.

(2)According to the passage, what portion of the park had originally been marked for use as a garbage dump?

[ ]

A.Less than half B.Exactly half

C.About one third D.Most of it

(3)As it is used in the passage, the phrase“for good”means ________.

[ ]

A.practically B.for ever

C.thoroughly D.a(chǎn)dvantageously

(4)According to the passage, one result of dumping industrial chemicals into the landfill was that ________.

[ ]

A.the land became unsafe for humans

B.the animals on the land died

C.the poisonous chemicals were washed into the nearby river

D.the smoke from the chemicals polluted the air surrounding the landfill
