With its fascinating and artistic accompanying music, singing and costumes, the Peking Opera is China’s national opera. Full of Chinese cultural facts, the opera presents the audience with an encyclopedia(百科全書(shū))of Chinese culture, as well as developing stories, beautiful paintings, magnificent costumes, graceful gestures and martial arts. Since Peking Opera enjoys a higher reputation than other local operas, almost every province in China has more than one Peking Opera troupe. Opera is so popular among Chinese people, especially seniors, that even “Peking Opera Month” has been declared.

Peking Opera’s main tune originated from Xipi and Erhuang in Anhui and Hubei and, over time, techniques from many other local operas were incorporated into Peking Opera.

It is believed that Peking Opera gradually came into being after 1790 when the famous four Anhui opera troupes came to Beijing. Peking Opera experienced fast development during the period of Emperor Qianlong and the infamous Empress Cixi, eventually becoming more accessible to the common people.

In ancient times, Peking Opera was performed mostly on stage in the open air, teahouses or temple courtyards. Since the orchestra played loudly, the performers developed a sharp style of singing. The costumes were a gorgeous collection of sharply contrasting colors to stand out on the stage lighted only by oil lamps. Peking Opera is a harmonious combination of the Grand Opera, ballet and acrobatics (雜技),consisting of dance, dialogue and martial arts.

The Peking Opera band mainly consists of an orchestra and percussion(打擊樂(lè)器)band. The former frequently accompanies peaceful scenes while the latter provides the right atmosphere for battle scenes. The orchestral instruments include the Erhu, Huqin, Yueqin, Sheng, Pipa and other instruments. The band usually sits on the left side of the stage.

If you are looking for a creative solution to a piece of work or a school assignment, don’t lock yourself up in a quiet room.

A new study suggests that moderate background noise is a better spur(動(dòng)力) to creative thinking than the sound of silence,Time magazine reported.

A paper published in the Journal of Consumer Research says that the perfect working environment should buzz(嗡嗡作響)with a little noise.

Researchers found that test subjects were at their most creative when background noise was measured at 70 decibels, the level one might find in a busy coffee shop.

A nearly silent environment(50 decibels)was too quiet. Turning up the volume to 85 decibels (a jackhammer tearing up the pavement outside your building) was counterproductive-the noise became a distraction.

The researchers asked 65 students at the University of British Columbia,Canada,to perform various creative tasks while noises recorded at a roadside restaurant were played in the background.

In one experiment, scientists asked participants to brainstorm ideas for a new type of mattress(氣墊). Test subjects had the most successful discussions when the noise in the background was noticeable but not too loud.

While a quiet environment may make it easier to read a book. the authors of the study say that moderate background noise creates just enough of a distraction to force people to think more imaginatively, without breaking their focus so completely that they can’t think at all.

Should we all head for Starbucks to get creative? Not necessarily.

Researchers found limited work time surrounded by the low-level noise of a coffeehouse is what really stimulates creativity.

Equally, working in a care environment isn’t good for everybody. The productivity boost was most obvious among those who were naturally creative to begin with.

1.The recommended level of background noise is__________.

A. 50 decibels B. 65 decibels

C. 70 decibels D. 85 decibels

2.Why is moderate background noise good for creativity?

A. It relaxes people and stops them from getting bored.

B. It can help people to focus on a subject.

C. It can absorb sudden noises that cause distraction.

D. It pushes people to use their imagination but doesn’t reach a level that disturbs them.

3.According to the last three paragraphs,___________.

A. the low—level noise of a coffeehouse may be too loud for some people to work with

B. if a person is not a creative type, then background noise may not be of so much help to them

C. a person’s own creative ability is as important as the environment they are in

D. working in a coffeehouse is effective for most people

4.Which best describes the writer’s tone in the passage?

A. Negative. B. Objective.

C. Enthusiastic. D. Doubtful.

Every September in China, people love to talk about the overprotective parents following their children around everywhere during university enrollment.

Now, with more than 420,000 youngsters in the UK starting their new college school year, what is their first day like? BBC’s Sean Coughlan described it in a recent report.

According to Coughlan, at the very beginning it is not hard to spot something familiar to Chinese–a stream of parents arriving with their sons and daughters at the student village. Mothers, fathers and a teenager–now most likely taller than they are – stand together like the three might have done on the first day of primary school.

“The approach road to the student village is a long traffic jam of family cars, stuffed full with boxes, pillows and nervous families,” he writes. “The door closes on a student’s room and parents and children go their separate ways. For many families, if childhood has a final moment, this is it.”

But saying goodbye to parents is not the only similarity between college freshmen in the UK and China. In both cases, new arrivals most want to know about their Internet connections. “It’s their most urgent concern,” notes Coughlan.

Even on their first day, university in the UK won’t be an entirely lonely experience for some new students. “Before they arrive they have been using social networking to get to know their future roommates,” writes Coughlan.

Still, the first night is something no UK university student ever forgets. There are people they meet and then spend three years avoiding and people who become their friends for the rest of their lives. First week stories are all about over-partying, bad cooking and misguided clothing, Coughlan says.

As he concludes: “These new students are entering their own soap opera of romance, friendship and ambition. It’s a huge adventure that they’ve worked for years to achieve.”

1.What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?

A. To introduce how UK students prepare for college.

B. To show different challenges that college freshmen face in the UK and China.

C. To describe how UK colleges welcome newcomers.

D. To inform us about what the first day of college is like in the UK.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A. On the first day of college, UK freshmen don’t know each other.

B. When the new semester begins, most UK freshmen drive to college by themselves.

C. For many freshmen, when they say goodbye to their parents, they are also saying goodbye to their childhood.

D. Most British parents stay around their children’s colleges for a few days at the beginning of the semester.

3.A similarity between college freshmen in the UK and China is that ______.

A. the approach roads to their colleges are packed with cars filled with nervous families

B. they have contacted their future roommates through social networking sites

C. once they get to the campus, they want to make sure that they have access to the Internet

D. they spend their first week getting to know their roommates and partying

4.From the article, we can conclude that Sean Coughlan’s report is ______.

A. descriptive B. critical

C. sympathetic D. bitter
