Moods (心情), say the experts, are feelings that are likely to become fixed, having effects on one’s outlook(way of looking at things) for hours, days or even weeks. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry, or simply lonely.

Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out; sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Scientists offers a lot of tranquilizers(鎮靜劑) and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug methods to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being nonpoisonous(無毒的). So next time you feel out of sorts, don’t head for the drug store―try the following method.

Of all the mood-changing self-help techniques, aerobic exercises (有氧運動) seem to be the best cure for a bad mood. “If you could keep the exercise, you’d be in high spirits,” says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.

Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercises compare favorably to drugs as a mood-raiser. Physical work such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercises – running, cycling, walking, swimming, or other repetitive and sustained activities that increase the heart rate and circulation(循環), and improve the body’s use of oxygen. Do them for at least 20 minutes a time, three to five times a week.

It can be inferred from the passage that __________.

 A. when one is in a bad mood, he or she must not work very well.

 B. the best way to overcome a bad mood is to talk to oneself

 C. some drugs are more effective than physical exercises

 D. taking drugs is at risk of being poisonous

The phrase "feel out of sorts", as is used in the second paragraph, could be best replaced by ____________.

   A. put things in order                               B. are in a bad mood

   C. search for tranquilizers                             D. want a mood-raiser

Which of the following best describes the organization of this passage?

 A. An exercise and its importance are explained

 B. A problem is examined and solutions are given

 C. Two different views of a problem are presented

 D. Recent developments in medicine are described

Having one of those days—or weeks—when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood(心情) will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster—often within a day or two.

Walk it off

Exercise is the most popular badmood buster. A person who's in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a fast tenminute walk, or doing some quick  exercises can do wonders towards changing the bad mood.

Tune it out

Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tension go away quickly, because music starts connection with past positive experiences we've had.

Give yourself a pep talk

Stop and listen to what's on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper, the pessimistic(悲觀的) messages you've been giving yourself, and then give optimistic answers. (“I still don't have a job.” vs “I have two interviews next week.”)

Reduce your stress

Relaxation techniques are wonderful moodlifters. These include deep breathing, stretching and visualizing, all of which sound complicated(復雜的) but aren't. One easy way to visualize: close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to distress is to make a todo list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas,  you realize you're not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.

Avoid things that won't improve your mood

TV may not help much: you need to increase your energy level and stimulate(刺激) your mind—something that the TV show “Neighbors” won't do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. The better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(面食), produce calming effects in people who have a desire for them.

1.Which of the following may help us stop a bad mood?

A.Doing nothing about it.

B.Exercising and enjoying music.

C.Writing down negative thoughts.

D.Talking about it with neighbors.

2.Why is it suggested that you close your eyes and picture the beach?

A.It helps remove bad mood.

B.It brings us a new technique.

C.It is not complicated to do so.

D.It is an area to be easily controlled.

3.TV may not improve your mood because it ________.

A.shows what happens around you

B.does not energize you

C.reminds you of eating and drinking

D.produces a calming effect

4.Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.Energy Level and Stress

B.How to Beat a Bad Mood

C.Bad Mood and Our Life

D.How to Control Your Feeling

閱讀理解。
Who hasn't found themselves reaching for the closest food available when they're tired and stressed?
More and more research is proving that this isn't all in our mind. Some foods really do lead to a change
in our moods (心情).
     Carbohydrate (碳水化合物) that calm
This is how some people medicate themselves with food-by reaching for cookies or pasta (面食)
whenever they're upset. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work. You must eat a meal consisting of 100%
carbohydrate, on an empty stomach, to obtain the serotonin (血清素) increase so that you have a good
mood.
To get the wished-for effect, you must not eat anything for four hours and then eat at least 30 grams
of straight carbohydrate. Dry cereal (麥片), a piece of bread with jam, or a potato should do the trick.
     Protein (蛋白質) for Power
Of course, sometimes we don't need to be calm and sleepy. Sometimes we need a great deal of mental
concentration, so this is when it's important to mix protein and carbohydrate. The protein will prevent the
tryptophan (色氨酸) from flooding your brain, and the rise in serotonin won't occur.
     Why dessert makes up Happy
Fat and sugar cause the brain to let go endorphins (內啡肽), which send pleasure signals throughout
the body. This would be fine, except humans are not particularly good at stopping at one cookie or cake.
You can also satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing fruit for dessert.
     Timing your meals for energy
Blood sugar drops after four hours of going without food, causing a decrease in energy. Eating usually
fixes this within 20 to 30 minutes, but don't suppose that eating more will cause a faster increase in energy.
When you eat has as much of an effect on your mood as what you eat. If you regularly go for a long
period of time between meals, rethink your schedule and plan ahead.
1. The underlined phrase in the third paragraph means _____.
A. be extremely smart
B. intend to cheat someone
C. bring about the desired result
D. do something to amuse people
2. The function of protein is _____.
A. to help you keep calm and sleepy
B. to make you feel energetic
C. to lead you to slowness
D. to increase serotonin in your brain
3. We can infer from the last two parts that _____.
A. fat and sugar can greatly help people feel happy
B. we humans tend to eat lots of cookies and cakes
C. the more we eat, the faster we will gain energy
D. what we eat is more important than when we eat
4. The main idea of the passage is _____.
A. eating for a better mood
B. eating to make you calm
C. eating for more protein
D. eating to make us strong
