Norman Bethune is one of China’s most famous heroes, but he wasn’t Chinese—he was Canadian. He gave his life to helping the Chinese people.

當我們潛入藍藻叢生的滇池底部,去尋找消失已久的栲栳魚,我們想知道究竟是什么污染了我們的湖水?當我們在海河岸邊一次又一次見證了打井隊尋找水源的失敗經歷時,我們想知道那些地下幾百米的水究竟到哪里去了?
如果世界人均水資源是一滿杯水的話,中國的人均水資源不過僅僅是一個杯底;而且由于時空分布極不均勻,在華北等人口聚集的地區,我們的人均水資源量甚至低于以色列、中東等地區。
危機不是即將到來,而是已經從四面八方悄悄開始。
在富裕的南方,幾十萬人,一夜之間就可能沒有水喝;在淮河岸邊,一場污水過后,所有河蟹養殖戶徹底破產;在發展中的北方,河流的生命幾乎絕跡;長江的河道里,人們花費上百萬元,只是為了尋找到一種名叫白鰭豚的水生魚類;“太湖美”、“汾河清”這樣的歌曲在全國的水污染地圖面前顯得滑稽、尷尬。從北到南,七大流域正在水污染危機崩潰的邊緣。
水是寬容的,因為寬容才產生了生命,也因為這種寬容,它容納了這個世界大部分骯臟的東西。中國的工業文明發展史濃縮了西方兩百年的時間,作為代價,中國的河流與湖泊也濃縮了西方兩百年的污染史。利益驅動、制度缺失、道德淪喪,對比農耕文明,對比泰晤士河的治理,一味追求利益與讓中國的江河湖泊重新變清究竟什么最重要?

在開封城幾十公里外,懸在幾百萬人口上方的黃河,又讓我們不斷地思考洪水的出路;在漳河兩岸,每年夏天都會增派武警來保護水源;在城市里,拉動任何一個抽水馬桶,寧夏缺水地區全家人一星期的生活用水就全部被沖到了下水道;在有些地方,水很貴,一瓶礦泉水的價格甚至比97號汽油還要貴兩倍……
中國人并不缺乏節水的歷史、節水的意識和節水的技術。坎兒井、北海團城這些古老的節水設施已經使用了幾千年,那么我們缺什么呢?對一戶農民、一個企業、一個地區而言,當節水比浪費水還要多花錢的時候,為什么要節水?當浪費水僅僅只是一個道德問題的時候,我們為什么要節水?
節水不僅是我們面對生存危機不得已的選擇,也是考驗我們這個民族道德與制度建設能力的一次機會。

黃河源頭有“千湖之縣”美譽的瑪多要搬遷了,原因是沒有水;太湖之濱的大款要搬走了,原因是水臟了;世界第四大湖——咸海,已經消失了一半;我們兒時記憶中的河流幾乎全部干枯了——我們的祖先是否想象過我們今天的遭遇?
人類的文明誕生在大河兩岸,蘇美爾人的崛起就是因為找到了與水和諧相處的方式;但是,蘇美爾文明的消亡,也正是由于對水的過度利用。兩百多年以前,人類發明了蒸汽機——一種利用水循環的機器,它推動著我們到達了今天的文明程度。我們生活在地球歷史中最美好的時期,但是我們是不是忘記了水可以誕生文明,也可以毀滅文明?
面對水,如果我們不能夠找到新的文明方式,我們還能在地球上待多久?
