On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom was by his aunt for causing some trouble. And he had to paint their fence(籬笆) which was 30 yards long. He knew other boys would him. He didn’t want to become a joke, so he thought hard. Then he came up with an idea and his brush to start the work.
A moment later, Ben Rogers came with an apple in his hand.
“You did something wrong again, right?” Ben asked.
“Of course not. I’m enjoying myself. Does a boy get a to paint a fence like this everyday?” Tom said and went on painting.
Ben watched in silence for a while and became more and more . “Tom, will you let me have a try?” He asked.
But Tom , “Sorry, but Aunt Polly trusted me to do the painting. She said only I could do the job .”
“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I’ll be really careful. I’ll give you half my . Wait,I’ll give you all of it.”
“That’s a deal,” said Tom. “But you must be careful.”
Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face joy in his heart. He sat down and started to eat the apple.
When Ben got , Billy was waiting for his turn. He gave Tom a kite for the chance to paint. Behind Bill, there were many others…
Soon Tom got lots of “treasure”, and the fence got three coats of paint. Aunt Polly was so pleased that she gave Tom a big apple!

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy a holiday present. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a band basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (收款處) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.

A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say “thank you ” to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in a fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.
